The Bottom Line

Cassie AKA Pixie Stardust

"So quick raise of hands: who's tired of the drug scene and the rave scene being synonymous? Now I know what you're going to say: "But they're not!!" Well yeah, I know that...most of the people reading this know that...but to the mainstream media and those outside our scene, drugs and raves go hand in hand. This is why it's hard to book a venue. This is why the cops assemble teams to shut us down. This is why it's sometimes hard to tell family, co-workers and non-raver friends that you rave. How did this happen?

Some people do drugs...period. Not only are they at raves, but they're attending shows at the local rock club, drinking and drugging at the bar down the street, house party hopping...you name it and somebody there is on drugs. The rave scene has perhaps attracted more drug users than the average because of the overload of bliss for all senses that our parties provide. However, if you look beyond your immediate fun and at the picture has a whole, you can see that abuse of drugs has almost destroyed and continues to tarnish electronic dance music events.

Due to the RAVE Act that was passed by Congress, any and all illegal activity happening inside a rave party (and it's the cops that decide if it's a rave or not) is not only the fault of the person performing the activity, but also the fault of the promoters. That means: if you get caught with drugs, or if you have a drug-related medical emergency (sometimes we forget that yes, drugs are actually harmful to you), not only are YOU going to jail...but so is the person who put the party together. It's no wonder that hardly anybody is really trying to make events happen. If you're wondering why Kansas City doesn't have a thriving scene, it's partly because of drugs: many of us have way too much to loose to risk it all because somebody wanted to make some money or somebody can't have fun sober. When all the people at the event are too busy cuddling and having "deep, spiritual conversations" they won't remember 10 seconds from the fact instead of dancing, the DJs don't want to play. When you're obviously on illegal substances in front of strangers, eventually the cops are going to intervene and shut us down. Venues don't want to rent their space if they think that drug money is going to be what pays for it, or if they think that illegal things are going to happen.

I don't want anybody to feel like I am trying to alienate or demonize them. The only people who should feel attacked by this article are the people who are coming to raves to sell drugs. Our (as in a group of Kansas City promoters) goal is to never have any drugs available for purchase inside the venue, and we are going to work hard to reach that. Once we do, I think you will see just how big and fabulous or scene can be.

Raves are for the enjoyment of electronic dance music. Do you know who's playing tonight? Or do you just want to know who's "working the party?" It makes me so sad to look along the walls and see lines of kids with their eyes rolled in the back of their heads and gnawing through pacifiers. I'm dancing, and it really kills the vibe when I start to worry about the shivering biscuit head sitting in front of the fan overdosing, or when I start to smell the puke from where you threw up in the corner.

Now you see, I am not anti-drug in the "just say no," Nancy Regan, DEA and war on drugs sense. I am pro-personal freedom. But we must remember: no matter our opinion, drugs are illegal. There are ways to be responsible, smart and safe without looking like a blubbering idiot and putting yourself and everyone else at risk. Do it.

The bottom line is, if we want to continue to have electronic dance music events, we MUST keep drug dealers out of our venues. The purchase and sale of illegal substances must be kept as far away from the concert as possible. If you care about the scene, do not walk in the door with anything illegal in your pockets (or taped to your leg, or in your bra, or in your sock, etc). Save the obviously drug-induced activities (massage trains, puddles, floor lightshows, etc) for the after party. Don't put the venue owner, the organizers, the DJs, and your friends at risk for something that is preventable. And if you haven't done so before, I challenge you to come to an event sober. If you can't enjoy a party while you're not intoxicated, you are not a raver, you are a drug addict who likes
pretty lights and loud music. You can get both of those things in the safety of your house, and I suggest you do it, because we could use the extra space on the dance floor.

An Interview with

DJ Mighty Max

By Pixi Stardust

What drew you to the rave scene?

- The people. I was a metal head before I listened to EDM, and people in the metal scene tend to be pretty mean sometimes. Everybody that I've ever met at an electronic music party has been cool as hell. I've met a lifelong best friend, met a few other pretty special people as well.

How did you become interested in DJing?
- I went to my first party (Chaos Theory 3) and saw how much the people loved the DJs and I decided I wanted to be that guy. I've liked electronic music for a long time, and growing up in the middle of nowhere it was hard to find good stuff. I started off listening to and producing trance, then Bob-O (DJ Dirty B) showed me some house and breaks records, and I fell in love with the breaks.

What crews and production companies are you affiliated with?
- 816 Technologies is mine and Bob-O's production company. We've hosted events in Omaha and St. Joseph (Altered States, Get Your Heart On, Spring Extravaganza). United Future Organization, aka UFOmaha, has invited me to join them this past year because some of the best DJs in the Midwest are a part of their crew.

I am also going to be doing work in Kansas City with Thru tha Roof Productions. Being involved with them is very flattering to me.

Where would you like to see your music career in five years?
- I'd like to see Bad Boy Bill opening up for me.

Besides mixing records, what else do you like to do for the scene?
- Bob-O and I have built a scene in St. Joseph. It isn't huge and thriving, but it was definitely non-existent before we started hosting events there. I'd really like to get Kansas City and Omaha connected, doing stuff together more like the Lazarus Project.

For those who don't know much about breakbeats, what are some artists you recommend?
- DJ Fixx, The Breakfastaz, Freestylers. Finding good stuff is really tough; you really have to dig for hot stuff.

Do you have any advice for people who want to start spinning records, or are just beginning?
- Music is like shaving. If you don't do something about it every day, before you know it, you'll be a bum.
