Lee Coombs is one of the hottest artists in breaks today, his tracks and remixes are everywhere...
A staple of the early Fingerlickin record days, he has since moved on to start his own label.
Many thanks to Lee for sitting down with Doug from Visionaryurbantactics.com for this interview.
1. How long have you been djing/and producing?
I started djing in 1989 and almost immediately wanted to start producing my
own music. My first record came out in 1991.
2. What exactly got you into the electronic music scene?
Back then it was a very new sound. As soon as I heard electro and acid house
in the 80's it fascinated me.
3. Tell us about the first party you ever went to.
It was a back room of a Pub in a Town near Cambridge. The night was called
'Uppers' and this is where I first properly heard acid house played in a
club type environment. The energy in the room was amazing or that's the way
it seemed to me at the time!
4. The Land of the Monkey Snake, tell us about that project.
It's my new cd mix album. I got totally inspired by Burning Man in 2005.
Everyone is crazy there and they totally loose themselves in the moment. I
thought it would make a good theme for the cd.
5. Any new singles or remixes your doing at this time that you can share
with us?
I've just finished a remix for The Freestylers. I'm also doing a remix for
Spinout records.
6. Recently you left Fingerlickin, is that correct?
I left Finger Licking after my last album 'Breakfast of Champions'. I felt
that we were drifting apart musically and wanted to concentrate on my own
label Thrust recordings.
7. Tell us about your gigs at Burning Man this last year, any chance you will be playing this year as well?
I played @ Opulent Temple on Wednesday night. It was amazing. The best sound
system I have ever heard in the middle of the desert with mountains rising
either side of us. It's pretty special. I played other gigs but that one
topped them all.
8. Are you still doing your San Francisco night, and if so, how is that
going?
Yes, the next one is in May 07. We do them 4 times a year roughly. Lots of
fun. It's my favorite city to play.
9. Where do you see breaks going in the future?
There's some really good music around at the moment, I like mixing up
electro with Tech house and breaks. That's where it's at for me.
10. Any live mixes/ or tracks online our readers might be able to listen
too?
You can download a free mix of my single 'Out of my mind' from my website.
