I've known Paul for about 8 years now, he has worked hard to become one of Chicago's top exports in the last couple of years...
With a slew of releases under his belt, as well as the releases under The Funk Monkeys, and a hectic touring schedule that has taken him overseas, he still finds time to chat with old friends about what he has been up to.
1. How long have you been djing and tell us about the different stages/names you have gone through over the years.
Growing up in the early 80's in Chicago every dj had a pet name of some sort, weather it be Julian 'jumpin' Perez, gabby "get down " Martinez, or Steve "silk" Hurley, or bad boy bill. Everyone had a pet name of some sort. Mine, was playboy. The funny thing is my friends would rag on me after I start using my real name. But you'll have that; I will never be ashamed of my past. My past is what makes me today. The things I have seen, gone threw and done make me who I am today in every aspect of my life. I have always played house, weather it was hard house, funky house, disco house, or currently electro house. [I'll have to admit to ribbing Paul over the playboy name, never his ability on the decks, dude has had scratching down for a long time, great track selection as well]
2. Been a busy year for you tour wise, going out of the country and such? What's been your favorite show this year and why?
In the states one of my favorite shows was probably in Tuscan Arizona, I was playing in front of thousands doing a tag team set with my boy Terry Mullan on the main stage at Earthdance. Thousands attended in the middle of the desert. It was my first desert party, and it was the first rave I have played in a year or so. Most events are club nights now a days. So the fact it was huge, old school, rave like, and in the desert was tight, but the best part was no dj showed up for the last time slot so we ended up playing for like 4 hours in front of thousands. Good times.
3. I see you have a new album coming out; can you tell us about it?
I have done quite a few things this year as Paul Anthony, and as the funk monkeys. The funk monkeys is a group that I had formed with good friends mike gillenwater, and Mark Almaria. Mark ended up taking a break and it?s just Mike and me now. But yes I have been working on many solo releases my most recent one is everybody dance originally on ammo then re-licensed on dirty fabric. Was remixed by Felipe Avilare, Bryan Jones, Bryan Cox, mike gillenwater and is set to be on my album. Which is a total of 12 tracks that I have composed. Which will be out soon. [House heads should be up on this release, as it will fly off the shelf, Paul has been making some slamming tracks]
4. Is it just you or is it the funk monkeys? if it's just you, are the funk monkeys putting out a album soon?
The funk monkeys - we have talked about an album, but at the moment we are so busy remixing, and have a slew of singles dropping, when we have a chance to take a breather from the releases on, carousel, dirty fabric, ammo, kontrast, kontrast black, subliminal, subliminal soul, hump recordings, bird ice, and many many many more.... then we might put out an album. But yes we are working towards that we have almost released an album like 3 or 4 times but end up breaking it up into singles... [Can not say enough about some of The Funk Monkeys release's, everybody's playing them, just great production work.]
5. What goals you got set for the upcoming year?
Stay consistent with what I am doing.... records. Releases, doing a legal cd...I will be featured on Charles Feelgood's new cd on moist music three separate times, once with me and my friend Filter Freq, and twice with The Funk Monkeys, and will be featured on my own cd, Filter Freq's cd, and Bryan Cox?s cd as well. [Even as a unknown dj, Paul would been relentless in promotion of his music, I have no doubt his increase of music production is only matched by his increase in promotion of his work, if only more up and comers had that drive]
6. I watched first hand how you climbed up yourself (with constant promotion) no less, to become one of Chicago?s top exports in recent years, any advice to the new guys?
Work your ass off...when you think your done, recreate yourself and do it again. And again.... always stay fresh and consistent. [Believe it, this guy is living proof that hard work behind the decks and networking can pay off if your music is worth it.]
7. Any projects in store for you and Bryan Jones?
We just got back in the studio recently after not doing anything for a little over a year. Last thing we did is still selling. We did the twin cousins lp on refreshing... hot release over 2000 sold had mad plays from Donald Glaude, Laidback Luke, Charles feel good, and many many other around the globe. [Bryan Jones is another hot new Chicago export that we hope to talk to soon; his stuff and his collar as high caliber are smoking as well]
8. Whets the off time like for you now, what do you like to do when not working on music and djing?
Man I always work.... but in the down time me and my girlfriend, and our dog kick it. Watch movies, and kinda are home bodies, sometimes we go out sushi clubbin' or what not but since clubbing is such a part of my job I try to stay away from it in my down time.
9. Been with your girl for a min now, any talk of marriage yet?

But no I don?t have any. Someone told me there are a few floating around for that matter I would love any of my tapes. I have 15000 copies floating around at that ...lol
